Sir Cliff Richard (real name is Harry Rodger Webb) is the only recording artist who has had a number one hit song in each of the last five decades and everything he touches appears to turn to gold with fans from across the world falling in love with his variety of rock tracks and Christmas classics. It could be said that he is the only artist who has been able to keep on top of this ever-changing industry with his music being a constant throughout.

Sir Cliff Info

Sir Cliff was born on 14 October 1940 in the United Provinces of British India. Although his passion has always been with music, he has also dabbled in the acting world, starring in a number of hit movies with the most famous being Summer Holiday and The Young Ones.

Together with his backing group, The Shadows, Sir Cliff Richard was seen by many as a rebellious singer of Rock and Roll who dominated the music scene during the 1950s and 1960s – long before The Beatles arrived! Many consider his single, Move It, that was released in 1958, to be the first authentic Rock and Roll record to be produced in the UK.

With a career spanning more than 50 years, Sir Cliff Richard has become a permanent fixture in the world of entertainment and is the third top selling singles artist in UK history in addition to selling approximately 250 million records across the world! His success has been recognised by the music industry with him being awarded a variety of gold and platinum discs. He has also received three Brit Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards throughout his career. Sir Cliff Richard also holds the record with Elvis Presley for being the only artist whose records have entered the UK singles chart in the first six decades between the 1950s and 2000s. He was awarded his Knighthood in 1995 and was the first rock star to be honoured in this way.

During a rain delay at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in 1996, Sir Cliff Richard was asked by the officials to entertain the crowds. He was handed a microphone and the rest is history!
